Factors that may Increase Insulin Resistance

A.  SHORT-TERM FACTORS

1. 

High blood glucose level for 12-24 hours

2. Rebound phenomenon
3. Infection with fever
4. Stressa
5. Surgery
6. Inactivity, bed rest
7. Ketoacidosis

B. LONG-TERM FACTORS

1. 

Puberty

2. Pregnancy
3. Weight gain, being overweight
4. Smoking
5. High blood pressure
6. Drugs, e.g. cortisone, contraceptive pills
7. Other diseases like toxic goiter, chronic urinary tract infection,
dental root canal infection, pollen allergy
