Using GLUCAGON

•  Every patient treated with insulin should have glucagon available.

Indications: Severe hypoglycemia (unconscious/convulsions or cannot eat or drink by him/herself)

Dose: 0.1 mg/10 kg body weight (1mg/ml solution)

Effect within 10-15 min.

The effect lasts for 30-60 min. Eat something when you are feeling better to keep the blood glucose up until the next meal, but don’t eat too much at once.

Side effects; Nausea. Wait at least 30 min. before you eat to avoid this problem.

Do not repeat the dose !!! One injection gives a sufficient level of glucacon in the blood.

Loss of effect can be caused by;

Store of Glycongen
ALREADY DEPLETED BY:
Exersice
Recent Hypoglycemia
Decreased food intake.
Example: illness
Glucagon
COUNTERACTED BY:
Alcohol
High dose of insulin

Always bring glucagon with you e.g. when going on a picnic, a hiking trip, a boat tour or a trip abroad.

Teach those that are close to you how to administer glucagon!

You can never make a mistake when giving glucagon. It has the same effect whether injected in the subcutaneous tissue or into the muscle.
